With the 'TomTom Curfer', car data can be used to gain insights in people's driving behaviour, which can lean to improved driving. As the designer I want the users to feel stimulated and competent about their driving skills. They have to trust the device and be motivated to improve their driving through gamification elements. I made a meaningful, engaging and usable new and improved version of the Curfer for TomTom and its' users.
Gary is a young gentleman, who was born and raised in The Hague, NL. He likes playing games like FIFA and GTA. Gary just recently got his drivers-license, but he doesn’t drive often and is therefore in-experienced.
As he finds driving an important skill to acquire, he’d want to improve his driving by gaining more experience through driving daily to random places.
The added functionality to the existing Curfer App, is ‘CHALLENGES’. It is an interactive game that offers multiple activities on a daily basis as the target audience wants to improve their driving skills. This function, however, requires connectivity with a TomTom GPS device or the TomTom GO Mobile App for its full use.
When connected, the driver will be navigated by the gps on the road while rewards can be achieved based on the Curfer’s score. He can choose to make the game implemented in his daily route. Or, he can accept a challenge to the destination given to him; if the users like my participant would like to go to random places.
If not connected, users can still play specific improving tasks for braking, idling, cornering and accelerating. Here, the challenges will be simple tasks, will not use gps and will be reviewed by the Curfer’s score.
A game would be nothing without rewards. Next to the badges the users can already earn while driving in the challenges, a new collection of rewards will be achieved when the driver accomplishes a skill during the challenge. When the user succeeds, the screen will turn green for 2 seconds and a ‘correct’ sound will be played, while else the screen wil turn red for 2 seconds and you’ll hear an ‘error’ sound; This, because the newbies might get distracted and confused of tone in voices. People love collecting and people love cars. So, every reward will be a part of a car. After the trip, the user can see which car part he received, as he only sees a black icon, to not interfere with his focus on the road, while driving. With his collection of parts, he can build his car, paint it, and proudly share it to the world.
This is a video demonstration of how the app would've worked.
